Nano Banana 2.1: What's New and How to Use It
Google's Nano Banana 2.1 brings sharper images, better text, targeted edits and cheaper image output. Here's what changed, how it compares and how to get great results.

Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026. It replaces Nano Banana 2 as the everyday image model in the Gemini family, sitting between the budget Nano Banana 2 Lite and the premium Nano Banana Pro. If you create product shots, thumbnails, posters or edited photos, it is the model most people will reach for first.
This guide covers what changed, how 2.1 compares with the other Nano Banana models and how to write prompts that get good results.
What's new in Nano Banana 2.1
Google highlights four areas of improvement: visual design, region-based editing, subject consistency and more natural-looking images. In practice that means:
- Sharper, more natural images. Textures, lighting and skin tones look less "AI" than in Nano Banana 2.
- Targeted edits. You can change one part of a picture, such as a background, a jacket color or a single object, while the rest of the image stays the same.
- Better consistency. Faces, outfits, logos and products hold up better across a series of images. You can pass up to 14 reference images in one request.
- More reliable text. Headlines, labels and short captions render more accurately, in many languages.
- 1K, 2K and 4K output in a wide range of aspect ratios, from 1:1 and 9:16 up to 21:9, plus extra-wide 4:1 and 8:1 panoramas.
- Adjustable thinking. Developers can set the thinking level to minimal, medium (the default) or high.
- Search grounding. Generation can use Google Search and Google Image Search for current information, such as today's weather or a recent event.
Cheaper image output
On the Gemini API, Nano Banana 2.1 image output costs $30 per million tokens, half of Nano Banana 2's $60. Input tokens cost slightly more than before, but for typical generation the price per image drops by roughly half. The Gemini API model ID is gemini-nano-banana-2.1.
How it compares
- Nano Banana 2.1 (October 2026): the new default for everyday creation and editing, with the lowest image output price of the three.
- Nano Banana 2 (February 2026,
gemini-3.1-flash-image): the previous default. Google is winding it down, so existing apps should plan to switch. - Nano Banana Pro (November 2025,
gemini-3-pro-image): still Google's premium model. It costs more per image and remains the pick for the most demanding professional work.
Google's own preference tests rank 2.1 ahead of both older models, but independent reviewers note that Pro can still produce more striking images in some everyday cases. For most people, 2.1 offers the best balance of quality, speed and price.
Known limitations
Google itself lists a few weak spots. Very small text can be hard to read at 1K, long passages of text are less reliable than short headlines, and character consistency is good but not perfect. Rendering text-heavy images at 2K or 4K and keeping on-image text short helps a lot.
How to use Nano Banana 2.1 on NanoBanana 2.1
- Open the generator on the homepage.
- Choose Text to Image to start from a prompt, or Image to Image to upload up to 14 photos.
- Pick an aspect ratio and a resolution. The credit cost appears on the button before you generate.
- Press Generate. Most images are ready in under a minute.
- Download the result, or press Edit this image to keep refining it with a follow-up instruction.
New accounts get free credits, so you can try all of this before paying.
Prompt tips
- Describe the scene, not keywords. "A ceramic mug on a sunlit kitchen table, morning light, shallow depth of field" works better than "mug, kitchen, light".
- Put on-image text in quotes. For example: a poster with the headline "SUMMER SALE".
- Name the style and the camera. "35mm film photo", "flat vector illustration" or "studio product photography" give the model a clear target.
- Use references for consistency. Upload the same person or product in each request and say what must stay unchanged.
- Edit in small steps. Change one thing per instruction ("make the jacket red") instead of rewriting the whole prompt.
Three prompts to try
- Studio product photo of a matte black wireless earbud case on wet slate, soft rim light, small water droplets, shallow depth of field, premium advertising style.
- Retro travel poster of Ljubljana's Triple Bridge at sunset, bold headline "VISIT LJUBLJANA", warm grainy print texture, mid-century illustration style.
- Ultra-wide panorama of the Julian Alps at sunrise above a sea of clouds, an alpine lake in the foreground, crisp detail, landscape photography.
